The BellRays don't need to explain, justify or proselytize themselves to anyone, and here's why: in a music market saturated with new-young-next-big-things that sound like so-and-so and have blog shelf lives that are too often like roadside fireworks (cheap, bright and short lived), The BellRays exist in their own dominion. They define and exemplify what's timeless, what's passionate, and what's real about playing music, and they have done it with a singular sense of devotion, innovation and skill that's undeniably remarkable since the early '90s. Nobody sounds like The BellRays, and The BellRays have never before sounded exactly like they do on Hard, Sweet & Sticky, an album titled thusly because guitarist and songwriter Bob Vennum wanted to encapsulate what the band's new songs were all about.

Architects, 'Vice' (Anodyne)
Midwestern punks take their badass riffage on the lam.
BY CHUCK EDDY 05.15.08 12:04 PM
These meat-and-potatoes Missourians spend their third album returning to the scene of the crime: murders on the Jersey Shore, outlaws in Oklahoma, Salinas jailbirds' daughters on the lam, MILFs seducing future MFAs in Orange County. They wear black and carry guns like Dad did, but so do the crooked cops. Their riffs aim for Angus Young as their shouting shoots for BTO and the Clash and Hüsker Dü. And if the vocals are mixed too low to keep the choruses consistently rousing, energy and emotion buoy the barrage regardless.

A local label is often nothing more than a clever name that some unsigned band slapped on the back of its self-released CD. Not so Anodyne. For years, it was hard to tell just what Anodyne was doing outside of the immediate area, but now this little imprint has made its mark, thanks not only to owner John Hulston's organized ambition but also to one major factor: distro. Our ultimate party: We're headed out to visit a friend in Brooklyn. We take a few shots of Grand Marnier, and in our jacket pocket is this CD from a Kansas City band that was repeating on our iPod the whole flight over Click here to read more.
The Architects don't stop. Because nobody can stop them -- not indifferent music-industry lackeys and not a teenage American market enamored of black bangs and screamo. The Architects will still play a limited Warped Tour run, open for Rancid, headline at tiny KC venues and hold four-hour rehearsals several times a week so that every show they put on is an exercise in jackhammering the shit out of rock and roll's front porch and trampling its rose bed. We've got some photos posted over on the Architects band page. More pics from other bands, mp3's, and videos coming soon. Click here to see the pictures.
